KATHLEEN SHAFFER
FOR SEBASTOPOL CITY COUNCIL

 New Face New Ideas

I will represent all of the citizens of Sebastopol by bringing decisive leadership to the City Council, by maintaining open communication to understand the needs of the neighborhoods, and by encouraging community participation in our local government.

What I will do as your City Council Member
I will bring a fresh approach to the Council. I am an independent candidate and I am not aligned with a particular group. I believe the willingness to reach consensus on issues is necessary to be effective.  As your Council Member, I pledge to work for you with action, not just words. I've walked every neighborhood in Sebastopol.  I've listened to you, my neighbors, talk about your concerns, and this is my response to your issues.

Building on a Sebastopol Tradition - The Northeast Plan
I've attended the Council and Planning Meetings and listened to the public comments about this plan. My position is to continue the tradition of industrial and light manufacturing in the area to preserve its character.  Seek  more light manufacturing businesses for the area that also sell their product on site. This will add to sales tax revenues and create the opportunity for more local jobs which will move us toward sustainability. Zone for a diversity of businesses in the area. Link the Northeast Area and downtown with a decorative walkway and bike lanes, and maintain architectural unity by using the current styles of lighting fixtures, signage and benches. Create one downtown. I suggest we move the density west, away from Morris Street to further protect the Laguna. I also suggest, where possible, renovating existing buildings to become mixed use.

Traffic Congestion, Repair Local Streets
Investigate ways to improve traffic flow. Identify crosswalks that need improvements and repair cracked sidewalks so walking is safe especially for seniors. My promise to voters is to find funding to repair local streets.

Build a Sustainable Local Economy
Let's do more to promote our town, our special appeal and our unique artisans, events, shops and restaurants. Launch a city portal that includes information, such as available commercial rentals and link a real time webcam. I believe we need more diversity to make our local economy sustainable. This means seeking businesses for Sebastopol that sell the products that we now drive to Santa Rosa to buy.

Neighborhood Action
Let's add more neighborhood benches around the city to promote unity and conversation.  "Green" our homes and buildings by making them more energy efficient, switch from grass lawns to xeriscape, and promote biking and walking.
